Credit, and what it really does to a Florida rate
People search for insurance with no credit check. The honest answer is that Florida allows credit-based insurance scoring, so there is no meaningful market that ignores it. The useful answer is that carriers weigh it very differently.
What the rule is
Florida permits insurers to use a credit-based insurance score in personal auto and homeowners rating, within limits set by state law. It is not your lending credit score and it does not include your income. Some carriers weigh it heavily, and some barely at all, which is the part worth acting on.
What we do about it
Some carriers weigh it lightly
The difference between companies here is real and invisible from the outside, which is one of the concrete things an independent agency is for: ask which of them weighs credit least.
We look at what else you can control
Continuous coverage, paid-in-full, a homeowner discount, and telematics where it makes sense.
We re-shop after twelve months
Insurance scores move. Most people never re-shop, which is exactly why they overpay.
How much it matters
Between the carrier that weighs credit heavily and the one that does not, the same driver can see a very different quote for identical coverage. That spread is the whole reason to have somebody quote more than one company.
Thin file is not bad credit
If you recently arrived in the country you may have no file at all, which some carriers treat far more kindly than a damaged one. Say so when you call, because it changes where we shop.
What this touches
Questions people actually ask
Does getting quotes hurt my credit?
No. An insurance score inquiry is a soft pull and does not affect your lending credit.
Work it out before anybody sells you anything
Four calculators that run in your browser, a page for every situation Florida puts people in, and the claims data for your own county. All of it free, and none of it behind a form. The form is for the other half of the job: when you have read enough and want a person on the phone.
