Home / Situations / New to Florida

You just moved here. Here is the order to do this in.

Florida runs on rules that do not exist where you came from. Three of them cost money in the first month if nobody tells you.

The three that matter first

One: once you take a job, enrol a child in school or establish residency, Florida expects the vehicle registered here, and registration requires Florida coverage. Two: Florida is a no-fault state, so your policy must carry $10,000 of personal injury protection, which almost certainly did not exist on your old policy. Three: your out-of-state insurer generally cannot simply follow you here, so this is a new policy, not a change of address.

The order that works

Insurance before registration

The tag office will ask for Florida coverage before it will register the car. Doing it the other way around means two trips.

Bring your prior policy

Proof of continuous coverage and your prior limits is worth real money on the new rate. Do not let it lapse in the move.

Then the home or the rental

If you bought here, the wind and flood conversation is completely different from anywhere else in the country. Start it before closing, not at closing.

Expect a different number

South Florida auto rates are among the highest in the country and they are not a reflection of you. Continuous prior coverage, a clean record and a full year of Florida history are the levers that move them, and the third one only arrives with time.

If you came from another country

Your foreign driving record generally does not transfer, which means you are rated as a new driver regardless of how long you have driven. There is a page about exactly this, and there are carriers that handle it better than others.

Questions people actually ask

Can I keep my old insurer?

Usually not for the Florida vehicle. Even national carriers write state by state, with a Florida policy form and Florida rates.

Work it out before anybody sells you anything

Four calculators that run in your browser, a page for every situation Florida puts people in, and the claims data for your own county. All of it free, and none of it behind a form. The form is for the other half of the job: when you have read enough and want a person on the phone.
