Umbrella liability, and why Florida makes it matter

It is the cheapest coverage per dollar of protection that exists, and the least sold, because nobody comes into an office asking for it by name.

What this touches

  • Liability above your auto and homeowners limits, usually in millions
  • Legal defence, which is often paid outside the limit rather than eating it
  • Claims your underlying policies exclude entirely, such as certain personal injury allegations
  • Uninsured motorist at the umbrella level, by endorsement with some carriers, which in this state is worth asking for

It only sits above limits that are high enough

An umbrella requires underlying liability at a level the carrier sets, commonly 250,000 by 500,000 on auto and 300,000 on the home. That is the catch and the point: raising your underlying limits to qualify is itself the cheapest part of the upgrade, and most people are below it because they were sold minimums years ago.

What moves the premium

  • Number of vehicles, drivers and properties, since it sits over all of them.
  • Drivers under 25 in the household.
  • A pool, a trampoline, a dog, or a boat, which are the classic liability exposures.
  • Rental property you own, which is included only when it is listed.

Why this state in particular

Florida does not require bodily injury liability on an auto policy, so the roads carry an unusual number of people with nothing to lose and nothing to pay with. That cuts both ways: the driver with a house and savings is the one a claim goes after, and an umbrella is what stands between a judgment and everything you have built.

If you are in one of these

Questions people actually ask

Is a million enough?

It is the right first question. The honest answer is that the second million costs far less than the first, so buy the amount your assets and future income actually need rather than the round number.

Does it cover my business?

No. A personal umbrella excludes business activity. That is a commercial umbrella, and it is a different page.

Work it out before anybody sells you anything

Four calculators that run in your browser, a page for every situation Florida puts people in, and the claims data for your own county. All of it free, and none of it behind a form. The form is for the other half of the job: when you have read enough and want a person on the phone.
