Motorcycle insurance, and Florida's strange rule

Florida does not require you to carry liability insurance to register a motorcycle. It requires you to be financially responsible, which is a different thing and a considerably worse deal than it sounds.

What this touches

  • Bodily injury and property damage liability
  • Uninsured motorist, which on a bike is the coverage that matters most
  • Collision and comprehensive, including theft, which is the most common motorcycle claim in this county
  • Accessories and custom parts coverage, which the base policy limits severely
  • Medical payments, since PIP does not apply to motorcycles

No PIP on a motorcycle

Florida's no-fault system does not cover motorcycles. Your own injuries are not paid by PIP, so medical payments coverage and health insurance are doing that job. Riders discover this in the emergency room, which is the wrong moment. If you carry no liability and cause injury, the state can suspend your licence and registration until you file proof and satisfy the claim.

What moves the premium

  • Engine displacement and bike type, with sport bikes rated in their own world.
  • Rider age, licence endorsement and completed safety courses.
  • Storage: garaged versus street parked, which drives the theft rating here.
  • Seasonal use, which some carriers will price for.

Accessories add up faster than the bike

Exhaust, seat, bags, guards and electronics routinely exceed the default accessory limit, which is often only a thousand or two. List them and insure them, or accept that a total loss pays for a stock bike.

Questions people actually ask

Can I file an SR-22 on a motorcycle policy?

Yes, and we do it the same way as an auto filing. See the SR-22 page for the timing.

Work it out before anybody sells you anything

Four calculators that run in your browser, a page for every situation Florida puts people in, and the claims data for your own county. All of it free, and none of it behind a form. The form is for the other half of the job: when you have read enough and want a person on the phone.
