Is that Citizens takeout offer inside the 20 percent window?
Two numbers decide whether this is your choice at all. Then there is a short list of things to check that has nothing to do with price.
Check these before you decide, because they are not about price
- Is the roof settled at replacement cost, or on an actual cash value schedule? On an older roof this is worth more than the premium difference.
- Is the hurricane deductible the same percentage on both?
- Is Coverage A the same on both, and is it still the right rebuild figure?
- What is the carrier's financial strength rating, and who rates it?
- Does it include the endorsements you have now: ordinance or law, water damage limits, screened enclosure?
- Does your flood arrangement change?
How this is calculated
Florida statute ends Citizens personal-lines eligibility when a participating private carrier offers coverage at a premium within 20% of the Citizens renewal premium. This tool applies that comparison to the two numbers you enter.
What this cannot know
It compares premiums only. It cannot read the policy forms, and the forms are where takeout offers differ most. Nothing here is a legal determination of your eligibility, which Citizens and the carrier make.
Work it out before anybody sells you anything
Four calculators that run in your browser, a page for every situation Florida puts people in, and the claims data for your own county. All of it free, and none of it behind a form. The form is for the other half of the job: when you have read enough and want a person on the phone.
