Wind-only, and how two policies cover one house
In parts of coastal Florida the private market will write everything except the wind. The wind is then a separate policy, often from Citizens, and the two have to be read together or they leave a hole between them.
Sa sa touche
- Windstorm and hail damage to the dwelling and other structures
- Contents damage caused by wind-driven rain entering through a wind-created opening
- Loss of use following a covered wind loss
- The hurricane deductible, which lives on this policy rather than on the other one
Ex-wind, and the seam between the two policies
A policy written excluding windstorm is called ex-wind. It handles fire, theft, liability and water; the wind-only policy handles the storm. The seam is where claims get argued: rain entering through a hole the wind made is a wind claim, and the same rain entering through a roof that simply failed is not. Both policies should be quoted together and read together, and any agent worth having will refuse to write one without seeing the other.
What moves the premium
- Distance to open water, which is the whole basis of the wind rate.
- The wind mitigation form, which matters more here than on any other line.
- Roof covering, age and shape.
- The hurricane deductible percentage you select.
Two policies, two deductibles, one storm
A hurricane that also causes a plumbing failure produces claims on both policies, each with its own deductible. It is not double payment and it is not a trick; it is what having two contracts means, and it is worth understanding before June rather than in October.

Can I get everything on one policy?
Sometimes, depending on the address and the year. Where we can, we will. Where we cannot, we will say so rather than pretending the market is different from what it is.
Work it out before anybody sells you anything
