General liability, in the language your contract uses
Most people arrive at this page because somebody asked for a certificate. The useful version of this conversation is not what the policy is, it is what the contract in your hand demands, so bring the contract.
Sa sa touche
- Bodily injury and property damage to third parties
- Products and completed operations, which is what follows you after the job
- Personal and advertising injury
- Medical payments regardless of fault
- Additional insured and waiver of subrogation endorsements, when the contract calls for them
Per occurrence, aggregate and the words in between
A one million by two million policy means one million for a single claim and two million for the policy year in total. Contracts often quietly demand more, or demand primary and non-contributory wording, and an endorsement your policy does not carry is the reason a certificate gets rejected. That is a fixable problem if we know before you sign.
What moves the premium
- Your classification code, which is decided by what you actually do rather than what the licence says.
- Payroll or receipts, since most GL policies are auditable.
- Subcontractor use and whether they carry their own coverage.
- Claims history and years in operation.
It is auditable, so the deposit is not the price
Most general liability policies audit at the end of the term against real payroll or receipts. Underreport at the start and the audit bill arrives later, usually at a bad time. We would rather estimate honestly on day one.

How fast can I get a certificate?
Once the policy is bound, usually the same day. Send us the exact wording the other party requires.
